AI and Art workshop

AI and Art

Creative loops, ethics and real-time audiovisual interaction

Workshop overview

A critical and practical map of AI-assisted creation

The workshop approaches artificial intelligence as a family of tools, models and systems already shaping image, video, sound, writing, performance and installation. It links artistic intention to generation, selection, transformation and critique, then demonstrates an audiovisual interaction loop between Max/MSP and TouchDesigner.

Programme

From the current landscape to a connected system

Visual presentation, case analysis, critical discussion and live demonstration place process and artistic decisions ahead of novelty alone.

Mapping the present

Generative AI and assisted editing across image, video, sound, text, 3D and multimodal practice.

From tool to creative system

The difference between automating a task, extending a decision and delegating a process; control, uncertainty and the artist's role.

Creative loops

Intention, generation, selection, transformation, evaluation and renewed iteration, with methods for documenting the process.

Ethics, authorship and provenance

Training data, consent, bias, cultural diversity, credit, traceability, material impact and responsibility for the outcome.

TouchDesigner + Max/MSP

Sound and gesture values travel through OSC; TouchDesigner maps them to visual parameters and returns control data to close the loop.

Discussion and closing

A shared reading of what the system decides, what the artist decides and how that relationship remains visible in the work.

Prerequisites

Who can take part

  • Students, artists, musicians, performers and people working with interactive or generative media.
  • No programming experience is required for the critical and conceptual sections.
  • Basic familiarity with any audiovisual software is useful for the technical demonstration.
Required materials

What to bring

  • A laptop and headphones for optional hands-on exploration.
  • TouchDesigner or Max/MSP only if participants want to reproduce the demonstration.
  • A notebook or digital document for process and provenance notes.
  • Optional personal project, prompt history or AI-assisted artwork for discussion.
Outcomes

Technical literacy with visible artistic agency

Back to workshops ->
  • A map of AI applications in contemporary artistic practice.
  • A creative-loop model that keeps human decisions assessable.
  • Questions for consent, bias, authorship and attribution.
  • An OSC-based architecture for audiovisual interaction.
  • A method for documenting provenance and transformation.
  • Criteria for turning a technical experiment into a coherent poetic decision.
